Electrospray Wings for Molecular Fishes - The use of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in analyzing polar pollutants in water, conférence

Dr. Thorsten REEMTSMA (Technical University of Berlin, Institute of Environmental Technology, Department of Water Quality Control)

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry has not only revolutionized the field of protein analysis and led to the development of proteomics. This technique has also drastically extended the range of small molecules that is now accessible to mass spectrometry towards very polar and ionic compounds.
Various examples will be shown how LC-MS can be used to identify and to quantify highly polar compounds from water. Obviously, LC-MS has developed into an indispensable tool to elucidate biodegradation pathways of organic contaminants as well as to quantify the concentration of pollutants in the aquatic environment.
